Responding After A Tragic Event

Counseling Toolkit for March 2018

The recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida on Valentine’s Day brought to light an all-too familiar fear and grief facing our communities, and it placed caregivers in the role of comforter and grief counselor. The recent statistics are astounding: there have been at least 239 school shootings since 2014, on average about five school shootings a month. Community tragedy, whether in the guise of a mass shooting in a public space (such as a school, movie theatre, mall, church) or those caused by natural disasters (eg. hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding) have proliferated in recent years. While the overall rate of violence in the United States is at a low, these tragedies have led to a general feeling of fear and anxiety. This month’s tool will provide a framework to follow when responding to a tragic event in your community.
